Significance of gratefulness

M. K. Gandhi beautifully put the significance of being grateful when he said, “I was complaining about not having good shoes, until I saw a person with no feet.” As the year 2022 has come to an end, we prominently recall, realize and cherish what we have, what we have seen and been through. The good things and the bad ones, the easy ways we chose or the hard ones we had to choose, the things we did for others and for ourselves… we must end the year with a warm heart full of gratefulness and appreciation for the lessons we learned this year, people we met, people and things we (had to) let go of and in short, each and every thing & being because of which/whom we’re living the life we have with utmost ease and peace.

Why to be grateful? What advantages one gets by being grateful and developing the skill of gratitude?

Gratitude fosters optimistic thinking, affirmative lookout and helps us to develop a more positive outlook towards everything in life. It makes us reflect on our lives, actions, and makes us appreciate what we have at this moment in life, instead of always striving for more, thinking and worrying about the future. Appreciating what we have, being thankful for it and affirming the same things again and again is basically what it means by being grateful.

Gratefulness actually leads to us understanding ourselves and our loved ones better. When we appreciate everything and everyone we have with us, we focus on how we connect to those things, how important those people are for us, how our lives are better because they are in it… and at the same time, we think about being able to do something (in return) for them, we reform ourselves, affirm the positive thoughts and attract blessings for them as well as ourselves.

With the developed and fostered sense of gratitude in mind, we look at everything from the lenses of grace and fortune which again results in we being more appreciative of things, we value them more and we try to preserve what we have that holds us beautifully connected to this world. This way of expressing, being, appreciating and thanking opens us up for the greater opportunities, we keep evolving with open minded outlook, we make effort for understanding, empathizing, supporting, accepting and helping wherever and whenever possible and as a result we receive things deeply and intensely from the universe as a return of what we offer gratitude for.
