Why should I seek therapy if I can just talk to my family members or friends?
A family member or a friend cannot always provide you with a safe and non judgmental space. Also, not all the problems and issues require advices and opinions of people around us, a lot of them instead require healthy processing and learning of coping mechanisms. A therapist is a professional who is skilled to help with a mental health crisis and this is more than simply talking to a friend or a family member.
Does one become too dependent on their therapist?
No. Therapy is a tool to learn coping mechanisms, process overwhelming emotions and build healthy resources. The therapist helps the client to learn these skills without dependency on the therapist.
