How to form Healthy Body Image?

Body image is a person’s perception of their physical self and the thoughts and feelings, positive, negative or both. Following are some ways in which you can start forming a healthy body image:

  1. Engage in self appreciation and positive self talk. Doing so helps you to slowly believe in yourself.
  2. Create little reminders and affirmations for your positive qualities. Focus on these positive qualities and know that nobody is perfect, and has negative qualities too, but reminding yourself of your positive qualities helps form a healthy body image.
  3. Do not fear the mirror, keep a track of thoughts that come to your mind. Look at yourself everyday, write down what you think about it, feel about it every day over a period of time.
  4. Do not compare your body to others’. Admire and compliment. Everyone has different body types so it is not wise to set a standard “perfect” body.
  5. Do not set harsh goals for yourself. Appreciate your shape and size. Take things one day at a time.
  6. Commit to doing things that make you feel good. Spend time with people who are not body focused.
  7. Embrace how you look and express gratitude to your body regularly.
  8. Talk to a mental health expert and learn skills to overcome negative self image. Talking, or counselling can bring a significant change to our thinking patterns, and help us lead mentally healthier lives and love our body.

However, one list cannot automatically tell you how to turn negative thoughts into a positive and healthy body image, but it can introduce you to healthier ways of looking at yourself and your body. The more you practice these new thought patterns the better you will feel about who you are and the body you naturally have,

Remember, how you talk and treat yourself has a direct impact on your self image and body image.
